Akumal Bay & the village

This is the Akumal most people picture: a shallow, protected bay where green sea turtles graze on seagrass a short swim from shore, plus beachfront restaurants, dive shops, small shops and grocery stores. Whether or not you stay nearby, this is where you'll spend your mornings.

Daytime brings tour buses and snorkel groups, so the best turtle swimming happens early, before the bay fills up. Our guests at Santamar by TAO and Tulum Country Club drive over — about five minutes — park, snorkel, grab breakfast, and head back before it gets busy. Worth knowing: Akumal Bay is the turtle spot, not your only beach. Both communities have closer everyday beach options, so you're only making this drive when you actually want the turtles.

Santamar by TAO

Santamar by TAO is a modern condo community in Akumal with rooftop and ground-level pools, ocean views, air-conditioned condos, elevators, secure parking and gym access for guests.

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Santamar is the free public beach within walking distance of the condos. Guests can easily walk to the beach for a morning swim or a relaxed beach day without having to drive. Akumal Bay is about a five-minute drive away when you want to go specifically for sea-turtle snorkeling.

Akumal village — with restaurants, shops and grocery stores — is also a short drive away. We still recommend a rental car for everyday errands, dining and exploring the Riviera Maya. Golfers can also easily access the nearby golf course.

Tulum Country Club

Despite the name, Tulum Country Club is an Akumal community — a quiet, gated development surrounded by golf course and jungle. Beach days are easy too. Guests can use the free shuttle pickup to Kay Beach Club, or drive across the bridge from Tulum Country Club to Playa Platino, a free public beach. Akumal Bay is about a five-minute drive away when you want to go specifically for sea-turtle snorkeling.

We still recommend a rental car for everyday errands, dining, beach trips and exploring the Riviera Maya. Tulum Country Club works just as well for couples, families and groups as Santamar does; the main difference is that the golf course and additional community amenities are located within Tulum Country Club, while Santamar has the advantage of a free public beach within walking distance.
