How to Get to Akumal from Cancun & Tulum Airports (2026 Guide)

The quick answer

Our recommendation: Rent a car.

If you're staying in Akumal, Tulum Country Club, Puerto Aventuras, Playa del Carmen, or another vacation rental, we generally recommend renting a car. It gives you the freedom to explore beaches, cenotes, beach clubs, restaurants, grocery stores, Mayan ruins, and nearby towns on your own schedule.

In many cases, it's also less expensive than relying on taxis, where even short trips can cost $40–60 USD.

If you don't want to drive immediately after landing, we recommend booking one of our trusted airport transfers and having a rental car delivered to your vacation rental the following day.

Cancun (CUN) vs Tulum (TQO)

Two airports now serve the Riviera Maya. Here's how they compare for Akumal-bound travelers:

• Cancun International Airport (CUN): ~105 km / 65 miles north of Akumal. Drive time 1h15–1h30. Hundreds of daily flights from the U.S., Canada, Europe and Latin America. Usually the cheapest fares.
• Tulum International Airport (TQO): ~68 km / 42 miles from Akumal. Drive time 60–75 minutes. Opened December 2023; growing list of U.S. carriers and charters. Fares often $50–$200 USD higher than CUN.

Distance and drive time

Both airports connect to Akumal via Federal Highway 307 (Carretera Chetumal-Puerto Juárez) — a modern four-lane divided highway with real shoulders, streetlights near towns, PEMEX and Mobil gas stations, and speed limits of 60–100 km/h.

• Cancun International Airport (CUN): approximately 105 km (65 miles) — about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes depending on traffic.
• Tulum International Airport (TQO): approximately 68 km (42 miles) — about 60–75 minutes depending on traffic.

Add 15–30 minutes on Friday afternoons and during holiday weekends — Playa del Carmen traffic backs up onto 307. Sunday morning is the fastest run of the week.

Private airport transfer

If you prefer not to drive after a long flight, a private airport transfer is an excellent option. You can book private transfers from both Cancun International Airport (CUN) and Tulum International Airport (TQO) through our recommended local transportation partners. Drivers greet you inside the terminal and take you directly to your vacation rental.

• Van up to 8 passengers: $135–$165 USD one-way (CUN)
• Sprinter up to 14 passengers: $220–$280 USD one-way (CUN)

• One free stop at OXXO or Chedraui for groceries

Renting a car

A rental car is the best value for guests who want to explore. Once you're in Akumal you'll want to visit Cenote Azul, Xel-Há, the Tulum ruins, Playa del Carmen, and neighboring beach clubs — all 15–45 minutes away by car and painful by taxi.

For most PPIM guests, renting a car is the best overall option. It gives you complete flexibility to visit beaches, cenotes, beach clubs, grocery stores, restaurants, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Tulum, and other Riviera Maya attractions without depending on expensive taxis.

What to know:

• Book through a reputable agency in advance — never accept "cheap" curbside offers.
• The "unlimited insurance" upsell at the counter is real; Mexican liability insurance is legally required and rarely included in the online rate.
• Photograph every panel of the car before you leave the lot.
• Compact cars fit Akumal parking best. Skip the giant SUV.
• Fill the tank at PEMEX or Mobil — always watch the pump reset to zero.

ADO bus and shared shuttles

The ADO bus is Mexico's excellent long-distance bus network. First-class buses run from both Cancun International Airport and Tulum International Airport to Playa del Carmen and Tulum for about $18–$22 USD. From either bus terminal you'd still need a taxi or colectivo to reach Akumal.

The ADO bus is mainly for solo budget travelers with light luggage and flexible timing. For families and most vacation rental guests, we recommend either a rental car or a private airport transfer.

Taxis, Uber and DiDi

Airport taxis are available from both Cancun and Tulum airports but are usually one of the most expensive transportation options — expect roughly $100–$140 USD one-way from CUN to Akumal.

Uber and DiDi operate in some parts of the Riviera Maya but are generally not practical for airport pickups and have limited availability in Akumal.

For most visitors, a rental car or private airport transfer is the more convenient option.

Arrival tips for Cancun & Tulum Airports

• Check with your mobile provider before you travel. Many U.S. and Canadian phone plans (such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and others) include Mexico roaming at no extra charge. Confirm your plan before your trip—you may not need to buy a local SIM card.
• Download and set up WhatsApp before you arrive. WhatsApp is the primary way businesses and locals communicate throughout Mexico. We use WhatsApp for airport transfers, rental car delivery, guest support, and sharing important arrival information. Having it ready before you land makes communication much easier.
• Ignore anyone in a white shirt or lanyard approaching you inside the airport. Many are timeshare representatives or transportation salespeople—not airport staff. Simply say “No, gracias” and continue walking.
• If you’ve booked transportation through PPIM Vacation Rentals, your driver will be waiting in the designated meeting area after customs with your name on a sign. We’ll also send the driver’s name, photo, and WhatsApp contact before your arrival.
• Use a bank ATM inside the airport if you need pesos. Santander and Banorte ATMs typically offer better exchange rates than currency exchange counters.
• If your phone plan doesn’t include Mexico, you can purchase an affordable Telcel or AT&T SIM card at OXXO or Chedraui after you arrive.
