Best Beaches in Akumal, Mexico: A Local's Guide for Guests at Santamar by TAO & Tulum Country Club (2026)
Updated July 26, 2026 · 9 min read
Akumal isn't just one beach — it's a coastline of very different bays, coves and beach clubs, each with its own personality. Whether you want to snorkel with wild sea turtles, spread out on a quiet stretch of white sand, spend a full day at a beach club, or wander a protected nesting beach with almost no one else in sight, there's a beach here that fits the day. This guide is written for the beaches our guests at Santamar by TAO and Tulum Country Club actually visit — the ones we recommend on check-in day. For the broader Akumal picture (food, cenotes, ruins, logistics), see The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Akumal, Mexico.
Local tip
For a full-service beach day with food, drinks, beach chairs, and excellent service, we recommend Kay Beach Club or La Playa Xpu-Ha Beach Club. Both are great options near Akumal.
Playa Akumal

Playa Akumal is the most famous beach in the area — a wide, protected crescent of soft white sand that opens onto some of the Caribbean's clearest turquoise water. It's the beach you've seen in every Akumal photo, and it's the one most first-time visitors ask about because it's home to a resident population of wild green sea turtles that graze in the seagrass just meters offshore.
- Best beach in the area for snorkeling with wild sea turtles.
- Soft white sand and shallow, calm turquoise water — very swimmable for all ages.
- Ideal for first-time visitors who want the classic Akumal experience.
- Arrive before 9–10 AM for the calmest water, best visibility and easiest parking.
- Short drive from both Santamar by TAO and Tulum Country Club.

Playa Platino is one of the best free beaches in the Akumal area and a genuine favorite of ours to recommend to guests. The sand is bright, powder soft and noticeably wider than the town beaches, and the water stays a striking Caribbean blue thanks to the way the offshore reef breaks the swell. It's quieter than Playa Akumal, which makes it excellent for swimming, floating and just relaxing in the shade of a palm.
- One of the best free beaches close to Akumal.
- Noticeably quieter than Playa Akumal.
- Excellent for swimming, floating and long relaxing afternoons.
- Beautiful, consistently clear Caribbean water.
- PPIM guests receive complimentary beach access.
- Short drive from both Santamar by TAO and Tulum Country Club.
La Playa Xpu-Ha Beach Club

La Playa Xpu-Ha Beach Club is one of our favorite beach clubs near Akumal, and the spot we point guests to when they want a proper full-day experience without the crowds of a resort. The beach itself is genuinely spectacular — a long, wide arc of powder-white sand backed by palms, with calm turquoise water that's shallow enough to wade out surprisingly far. It's a fantastic place for families and couples alike, and it's close enough to easily fit into your day.
- One of our favorite beach clubs in the area.
- Approximately 10–15 minutes from Santamar by TAO and Tulum Country Club.
- Wide white sand beach and calm turquoise Caribbean water.
- Excellent for families and for couples wanting a relaxed day.
- Beach chairs, umbrellas, restaurant, bar, showers and restrooms all on site.
- The kind of place you can happily spend an entire day.

It's an excellent option when you want to be looked after all day — order lunch to your lounger, take a swim, order a cocktail, repeat.

Playa Xcacel

Playa Xcacel is one of the Riviera Maya's most beautiful natural beaches — a protected sea turtle nesting beach ringed by low jungle, with soft white sand and clear Caribbean water. Because it's a protected area with a small entry fee and limited amenities, it stays far less crowded than Playa Akumal, and it feels genuinely wild in a way most beaches in the region no longer do. Bring water, snacks and reef-safe sunscreen.
- One of the most beautiful natural beaches in the Riviera Maya.
- Protected sea turtle nesting beach — please follow all conservation rules.
- Soft white sand and calm, clear Caribbean water.
- Surrounded by natural jungle with minimal development.
